How to Connect to Your Ancestors

Connecting to your ancestors is a wonderful way to gain spiritual insight and deepen your connection to your higher self. Our ancestors have earthly experience and the wisdom of the other side that we can learn from. If you’re unsure of where to start in your communication here are a few ways that you can use to speak to those who have gone before.

Establish a connection with ancestors that you knew

Start with relationships that are already established. It will be easier to form a spiritual connection because your bond was formed before your ancestor left this life. Find a quiet place and start by meditating and calling your ancestors to speak to you. If meditating is too difficult or doesn’t feel like the right way to connect to them then start by recalling your favorite memories of them. Speak aloud and talk about how you felt and how those memories bring you comfort.

Learn about more distant ancestors from living family members

Everyone has ancestors that they haven’t met that other family members remember. Talk to your relatives and ask them about ancestors that have passed before you were born. Learn about them through their stories and what they remember they were like. If there are photos available look through them and talk about what was happening when they took that picture. The more you talk about them with people who knew them the more real they will feel to you.

Research your ethnic ancestry

If you want to dive deeper into your ancestral magic then you will need to research your ethnic background. Learn about the customs that they would have participated in and try to see the world through their eyes. This will allow you to align with the energies of your ancestors and open up communication to them.

Set up a family altar

You can set your altar anywhere as long as it is somewhere you can see every day. Place family photos on your altar, family heirlooms, culturally significant items, or anything that is connected to your family. You want it to feel personal and specific to your family to invite your ancestors into your space and make them feel at home. It should feel homey so don’t worry about making it fancy.

Don’t feel discouraged if you don’t hear your ancestors speak to you immediately. Remember that spirituality takes work and nothing happens instantaneously. Sometimes the line of communication between us and the other side is not very clear because our energies are not aligned. Try to focus your intent on receiving their messages and be open to what they have to say.
